13-15th February - Tan Hill

This year saw a return to Tan Hill for the traditional Valentine's / birthday camping weekend. We arrived in the aftermath of the worst snowfall in the UK for quite some time, and so there was plenty of snow and ice around as we pitched our tents in the pitch black to the sound of the landlady screaming at us that we were mad. Sadly the pub was quite busy, so we didn't have a repeat of our last visit where we had to serve ouselves as the barman couldn't be bothered. The next day we went for a trudge in the snow, which was up to our waists in places. Simon managed to ski the entire route, other than having to take them off to cross a road. Then weirdly, in the night, it all melted, and by morning there was hardly any snow left and we found our tents in huge puddles of water. The winter ended there and then, as suddenly as it had begun.
